An Ormond man whose house set a new $3.65m suburban record wanted to fly the agent to Thailand to celebrate last Saturday.
The five-bedroom Californian bungalow at 20 Anthony St overtook Ormond’s previous $3m benchmark, set by 27 Leila Rd in 2021, by a whopping $650,000.
Buxton Bentleigh’s Claude Mery said four bidders competed for the keys to the Anthony St abode boasting restored period features, an outdoor kitchen and a glass-tiled pool and spa.

Mr Mery said the owner, director of local builder Majestique Homes, had extended and renovated the abode.
The house sold for a sum of $450,000 above the $3.25m reserve, as the “elated” vendor tuned into the auction over the phone from Thailand.
“He was on holiday and he wanted to fly me out to celebrate, but I said, ‘I’m too busy’,” Mr Mery said.
PropTrack figures show Victoria recorded a 63 per cent preliminary clearance rate from 1004 auction results last week.
The owners of a Seddon period house who did a large-scale renovation before selling also reaped the rewards when their home scored $1.5205m, a figure $120,500 above the $1.4m reserve.
Seven bidders vied for 114 Charles St, a three-bedroom property boasting a living room stacker door opening to the entertaining deck with an auto-retractable awning and bluestone paving.
Village Real Estate director Joseph Luppino said the top-quality renovation and “blue chip” location proved popular.
Mr Luppino said the gap between turnkey and original-condition property prices was becoming “quite immense” as building costs soared.

“The unrenovated version of this would probably have been $950,000 to $1m,” he added.
In Melbourne’s southeast, a four-bedroom house at 8 Erie Ave, Rowville fetched $1.115 million, a sum of $125,000 above reserve.
Ray White Oakleigh’s Nick Strilakos said out of four bidders, an upsizing family won the keys.
About 18km away, a three-bedroom townhouse at 71 Dublin Rd, Ringwood East, attracted six bidders and fetched $1,066m.
Barry Plant Ringwood and Heathmont partner Jay Carroll Partner said the multiple living areas, 351sq m block and lack of a corporate body contributed to the townhouse’s appeal.
Six bidders battled for a three-bedroom house at 35 Chelsworth Loop, Craigieburn, which sold for $702,000.
Barry Plant Craigieburn’s Romi Sleiman said a family with children snapped up the keys.
“The underbidder was an investor,” Mr Sleiman said.
About 1223 auctions are expected across the state this week.
A two-bedroom apartment at 1106/3 Yarra St, South Yarra, sold for $596,000. Kay & Burton Stonnington’s Tim Blackett said four bidders lodged a total of 44 bids for the property which was announced on the market at $550,000.
Mr Blackett said the interested buyers included investors and young first-home buyers.
“It was in a well-built apartment building, with no combustible cladding, which a lot of people asked about,” Mr. Blackett said.
“It also has great amenities for residents including a pool, gym, resident’s lounge, a beautiful terrace and location close to transport, with South Yarra station right at your doorstep.”
