Los Altos Hills, a semi-rural California enclave known for its woodlands and proximity to Silicon Valley, is home to a recent project by Sonoma-based firm Hommeboys Interiors. The company, founded by Alex Mutter-Rottmayer and Austin Carrier, transformed a 6,000-square-foot residence for a tech couple and their children.
Blending Indoor and Outdoor Living
Hommeboys Interiors is recognized for its ability to merge indoor and outdoor spaces, creating textured interiors with a focus on organic materials. This expertise aligned with the homeowners’ vision for a grand yet warm family home. The project involved a complete gut remodel, reworking the exterior with stone and timber to better integrate with the natural surroundings.
Natural Materials Define the Space
Inside, the home features a curated material palette emphasizing wood and stone. Oak paneling with a pronounced grain adorns walls and ceilings, diffusing light to create a welcoming atmosphere. Natural stone walls add a rugged contrast to more refined elements like veined marbles, hand-applied plaster, and patinated steel.
The three fireplaces are central to the design. In the living room, an angular plaster-clad fireplace serves as a functional sculpture, influencing the room’s furniture arrangement. The family room features a Corten steel fireplace wall, creating a warm, intimate ambiance. The primary bedroom fireplace, finished in linear-textured plaster, contrasts with the room’s serene design.
A Kitchen as the Heart of the Home
The kitchen showcases Hommeboys’ innovative use of natural materials, combining oak paneling, Calacatta Monet marble, and natural stone. A 15-foot custom lighting fixture from Ovature Studio adds a graphic element to the space, which is designed for both family gatherings and entertaining.
The designers note, “The house is definitely modern, but we leaned into natural materials to add an organic, timeless quality that felt warm and inviting, not fixed and sterile.” The result is a home that balances sophistication with approachability, enhanced by abundant natural light.
This project reflects a growing trend in residential design, where modern aesthetics are softened by natural elements, creating spaces that are both visually striking and comfortably livable. The home now serves as a perfect backdrop for the family’s daily life and social activities.
