Nike Exhibition Opens in New York Showcasing Archive and Design - nike exhibition new york
The Nike exhibition opened at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City through March 2027.

The Nike swoosh ranks among the world’s most recognizable symbols. The Vitra Design Museum has spent years exploring the history of sports and design. In 2024, the institution presented Nike: Form Follows Motion in Germany. Now, the exhibition has moved to New York City, running at the Museum of Arts and Design through March 2027.

A Rare Look Inside the Company Archives

Nike possesses a massive private collection known as the Department of Nike Archives, or DNA. The Vitra Design Museum secured unprecedented access to these holdings for the exhibition. Curator Glenn Adamson described the depth of the collection, which includes objects, documents, prototypes, and material research.

The timing of the New York presentation aligns with significant local sports moments. The Knicks claimed their first NBA championship in 53 years in 2024, and the 2026 World Cup final took place just across the river. Adamson noted that Nike has a long history with the city, tracing back to the early 1980s when hip-hop culture emerged from Queens and Harlem. To honor this connection, graffiti artist Faust created the exhibition catalog cover and signed the museum store door.

Connection to New York City

Adamson stated the exhibition traveling to the city felt appropriate. At that time, hip-hop culture emerged from Queens and Harlem.

From Sketches to Sneakers

The show moves beyond finished products to reveal the development process.

The installation is divided into four sections. The first, “Track,” covers the company’s origins with co-founder Phil Knight and coach Bill Bowerman in the 1960s. The final section, “Relation,” features 50 avant-garde footwear styles and hip-hop music videos, illustrating the link between the brand and streetwear culture.

Adamson highlighted the presence of rare items. The archives contain more than 200,000 objects, many displayed for the first time. This material provides a view of the design process as it happened, showing how complex technical concepts were invented and developed.

Designing for the Future

While the exhibition highlights history, it also looks forward. The “Sensation” section examines Nike’s research into circular manufacturing and material sourcing. This focus on recycling addresses the environmental impact of the footwear industry.
